Bacteria : the benign, the bad, and the beautiful by Trudy M. Wassenaar

This book introduces bacteria and basic microbiology to lay readers. Each chapter concentrates on a particular topic and can be read in isolation or as part of the whole. Real examples and stories are used to  illustrate specific pathogens making the topic more understandable for those of us who do not have any prior knowledge of the discipline. Although scientific names are used, in general, scientific terminology is avoided in order to make the material more interesting and understandable to a larger audience. It is an interesting read and highly recommended.
